N.H.'s First-in-the-Nation Status Goes Unchallenged in Cleveland

Allegra Boverman for NHPR

An expected effort in Cleveland this week to challenge New Hampshire’s leadoff position in the presidential primary process never materialized.

Republican delegates are drafting the party’s rules this week in advance of next week’s convention.

National Committeewoman Juliana Bergeron of Keene says no rule changes regarding the primary were offered Thursday, ensuring New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation status will stand.

She says she and other New Hampshire representatives put in a lot of work behind the scenes this week to push for keeping the system as is.

"We did make a lot of calls and worked with the other carve-out states, particularly South Carolina and Iowa, and I think the prior work paid off."

The rules committee did vote to set up a commission to study the presidential nominating calendar for the 2020 election.

That commission is expected to report back to the Republican National Convention by 2018.
