N.H. This Weekend: Five Plays in Three Days

derryoperahouse.com

Summer brings plenty of Summer Stock Theater to New Hampshire.  No matter where you reside, there is most likely a theater within driving distance. Many of the theaters have been in operation for over 80 years, and many are also housed in historic structures.  Here are five theaters, and five plays, to keep you entertained over three days.

The Best Little Whorehouse in TexasDerry Opera House.  The Derry Opera House is a Colonial Revival building designed by architect George G. Adams, and was completed in 1904.

42nd Street: New London Barn Playhouse.  The Barn Playhouse is the oldest, continuously operating Summer Stock Theater in New Hampshire.  Plays are performed in the Everett Barn, which was built around 1820.

An Inspector Calls: Peterborough Players.  The Peterborough Players was founded in 1933 by Edith Bonds Stearns.  Plays are performed in an 18th century barn on the former Hadley Farm.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle: Barnstormers Theatre, Tamworth.  The first season for the Barnstormers was 1931.  They would open in Tamworth on Monday, travel to towns in Maine and New Hampshire for five days, returning for a final performance on Saturday.  Since 1935, The Barnstormers have been located in the former Kimball’s Store on Main Street.

The Little Mermaid: Weathervane Theatre, Whitefield.  The predecessor to the Weathervane was The Chase, which opened in a barn in 1934.  William Chase, an art critic for The New York Times, brought actors, singers and dancers from New York to the wilds of New Hampshire.
