N.H. PUC Warns of Phone Scam for Unpaid Balances

NHPR Photo

The New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission is warning gas and electric customers of a phone scam about past-due balances.

The commission says the caller demands immediate payment of the account, typically via a pre-paid card, and threatens disconnection of utility service unless payment is received.

The commission says customers receiving these calls should hang up and call their utility company or the commission itself.

It says utility customers at risk of disconnection due to nonpayment will get a written notice two weeks before any proposed disconnection date. The notice also tells customers what to do to avoid disconnection.
