The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has a new commander. A change of command ceremony was held Friday morning.
Several hundred shipyard employees and Navy personnel gathered for the formal ceremony inside one of the shipyard’s massive warehouse-like structures.
Senator Kelly Ayotte gave brief remarks before Captain William Greene was officially relieved of command by Captain David Hunt.
“To the workforce, I am humbled and honored to have the privilege to serve you as your 85th shipyard commander. I look forward to continuing the tradition of exceptional work leading this team of submarine professionals.”
Under Captain Greene, the shipyard completed several refits of submarines ahead of schedule and under budget, according to information provided at the event. The shipyard was also recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency during Greene’s tenure as an environmental leader in the region.
