Modest Fashion on Instagram

Dolce and Gabbana, the Italian fashion house known for underwear-inspired lace and satin dresses and clingy silhouettes, recently unveiled a new line of luxury hijabs and abayas for Muslim women. Smart move if you follow Fortune magazine’s prediction that Muslim consumers will spend an estimated $484 billion on clothing and footwear by 2019. So, is Dolce and Gabbana’s new line a bold move toward inclusion? Or a calculated play for profits?

To shed some light on the matter, we spoke with Alia Khan, Chairwoman of the Islamic Fashion and Design Counsel. She says that D&G's new collection is a very good thing - and a wise move for the brand.

"If they see that this is a market with a huge opportunity for them, I applaud them. You know, they took that step and perhaps they would see themselves as someone that took a little bit of a risk."

The new campaigns may also help combat stereotypes in the US. Khan points out that Muslim woman are "very powerful consumers" and the more they are represented in the mainstream market, the easier it will be for people to "[to step] into reality and [get] out of their television sets" where women in hijabs are rarely presented as three dimensional.

"This consumer knows what they want and they don't compromise very easily because they've taken to this way of life not as a passing fancy or a fad or a trend, it's really for a higher purpose...that does not mean to them that they forgo looking great."

Even though luxury brands are still finding their footing in the world of modest fashion, bloggers and fashionistas have taken matters into their own hands. We jumped into the world of modest fashion on Instagram and here are some of our favorites.
