Marchand Files For Governor, Says He Feels Like The Frontrunner

Josh Rogers for NHPR

Democrat Steve Marchand made his run for governor official. The former Portsmouth mayor says he sees himself as the frontrunner.

Marchand says he hopes to bring progressive values and an auditor's sensibility to the corner office. After he filed his campaign, he said 200 plus campaign events he's held and the thousands of voters he's talked to have taught him a valuable lesson: dDmocrats  want a candidate who is capable of being frank and getting specific.

"It turns out that when you meet enough voters and have the backgound that I have that people are ready for thoughtful leadership that is ready to let it rip."

Marchand added that after all his campaigning - he ran in 2016 and launched his 2018 effort last April - he's close to marshalling the support he thinks he'll need to win the Democratic primary. He faces former state senator Molly Kelly.

Many high-profile Democrats, including Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Maggie Hassan, and Manchester mayor Joyce Craig, have endorsed Kelly.

Josh has worked at NHPR since 2000.
