Living In A "Food Desert," Berlin Ponders A Food Co-op

A food co-op in Littleton has been so successful that it plans to expand the size of its building next year. And now some people are exploring whether to try the same thing in Berlin.

“Well, we started the Local Works Berlin Farmer’s Marketsix years ago and we think that showed there was a demand locally for fresh, locally sourced food,” says Laura Jamison. She’s with the Berlin Food Co-op Committee. “The food co-op would offer that as a year-around opportunity, not just for the customers but also for the producers and we see that as economic development.”

In a 2011 studyThe Carsey Institute described Berlin as a “food desert,” citing “limited access to affordable and nutritious food.”

A public meeting to discuss the co-op and get results of a feasibility study is planned on Wednesday January 27 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm in Berlin at the White Mountains Community College cafeteria.
