The second time was the charm for former state representative Jim Lawrence of Hudson, who defeated six other opponents in the race for Republican nomination in the state's 2nd congressional district.
At around 10:30 Tuesday night, Lawrence stepped up to the podium at Sky Meadow Country Club in Nashua to thank his supporters.
Lawrence said he understands what voters want.
"They want Washington, DC to stop over-regulating and overtaxing our small businesses, allow our economy to grow, and to keep us safe from terrorism around the world," he said. "And to allow the great people of New Hampshire to obtain what we all want: the American dream.
Lawrence outstripped his chief rival, state Rep. Jack Flanagan of Brookline, by more than 10 points.
Supporters like Raul Blanche of Hollis credit Lawrence’s experience as an air force veteran.
"He’s someone I could have a cigar with," he said. "One key issue I’m sensitive to is that there are few medical facilities for veterans in New Hampshire. He could bring additional horsepower to that issue."
This is Lawrence’s second run for Congress. He lost in the GOP primary two years ago. This November, he’ll face Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Annie Kuster, who had no primary opponent this year.
