A special House election this week in Hampstead and Kingston echoes the statewide debate over New Hampshire’s next two-year budget.

The Republican candidate in Tuesday’s Rockingham District 13 contest, Dennis Green of Hampstead, told the Tri-Town Times the state should live within its means and stand against tax increases. Green worked for over 20 years in automotive management.

The Democratic candidate, Carol Croteau of Kingston, is an anti-bullying advocate. She has criticized the budget passed by the Republican-majority House, saying it would lead to increased demands on social service agencies while downshifting costs to local taxpayers.

The seat has been vacant since the February resignation of Republican representative Ann Howe.
