Feast on NHPR Holiday Programs

Let New Hampshire Public Radio be your holiday soundtrack this Thanksgiving Day!

In between football games, feasting and family, take a listen to the special programming NHPR will air on Thursday, November 23.

The Science of Gratitude

Giving thanks goes beyond one day, one holiday. How do you cultivate more gratitude in your life? With your family and children? In the workplace? In your community?

The Science of Gratitude is a one-hour special narrated by Academy Award®-winning actress Susan Sarandon and distributed by Public Radio International.  The program blends scientific research with personal stories – focusing on how gratitude can drive individual satisfaction, positive relationships, and even influence your health. The special first aired in 2015 and will be airing again on NHPR from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.

Giving Thanks

Music from the London Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Orchestra and readings from classic Jack Kerouac and Thornton Wilder texts grace the two-hour “Giving Thanks” program. A holiday staple for many public media stations, the program serves up a contemporary celebration of classical music and stories of Thanksgiving. Famed French chef Jacques Pepin and his teen-aged granddaughter feature on the special, along with the host of The Splendid Table, Francis Lam. Giving Thanks airs on NHPR from 12-2 p.m., the perfect accompaniment to your holiday table.

Milk Street Radio

As you clear away the dinner dishes, tune in for a rebroadcast of Milk Street Radio, the hour-long public radio podcast from Christopher Kimball that features cooking, food, farming, restaurants, wine, and the lives and cultures of food growers, producers and creators. Milk Street makes its way to the airwaves from 2 to 3 p.m.

BackStory: American as Pumpkin Pie

From Public Radio International, BackStory goes beyond facts and headlines to explore how the past shapes our present. This episode hour explores the origins of our national holiday, tapping historians and scholars to discuss how Thanksgiving evolved from its birth in Massachusetts to contemporary times. Also part of the episode - legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach shares his feelings about spending many of his Thanksgiving holidays on the gridiron, playing for “America’s Team.” BackStory will air at 3 p.m. on NHPR.

Can Laughing Make Us Healthier?

It IS a laughing matter, in this rebroadcast of a classic Studio 360 episode. Host Kurt Anderson is joined by Only Human podcast host Mary Harris at a laughter yoga class; a neuroscientist who moonlights as a standup comedian gives his take on laughter; and comic Chris Gethard shares a personal story about the ties between depression and humor. The program airs from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening.

Best of the Best: Third Coast Festival Broadcast

Hear some of the most inspiring, informative and intriguing audio documentaries of the year! Each year, judges at The Third Coast International Audio Festival comb through hundreds of entries from around the globe to choose winning documentaries that push the art form forward. Cap your Thanksgiving holiday from 8 to 10 p.m. with two hours of inspiring audio.
