NHPR ADDS RADIO EDITION OF ACCLAIMED PODCAST TO EVENING LINE-UP
The Daily - an esteemed program from The New York Times and American Public Media - will offer listeners deep and thoughtful analysis on compelling stories in the news, each weekday on NHPR.
New Hampshire Public Radio will be the first public media organization in New England to carry The Daily when the program begins airing on NHPR on Monday, July 9. The 30-minute show offers a conversational, approachable reflection on the news, and draws on the expertise and quality of The New York Times’ vast network of more than 1450 journalists worldwide.
The radio edition of The Daily launched earlier this year; the podcast from which it stems launched in 2017 to both popular and critical acclaim, becoming the most downloaded new show of 2017 on Apple Podcasts. The Daily podcast is popular with a wide audience: 4.5 million people listen to the podcast each month.
The program host is Michael Barbaro, a former national political correspondent for The New York Times; host of a political podcast The Run-Up; and a veteran of The Washington Post.
According to press materials from American Public Media:
In a tribute to The Daily, The New Yorker wrote: “In Barbaro’s hands—or, rather, in Barbaro’s voice—The Times becomes conversational and intimate, instead of inky and cumbersome. It’s a twenty-minute update murmured in your ear by a well-informed, sensitive, funny, modest friend—the kind of person who has as many questions as answers.” The Atlantic called Barbaro “America’s podcasting sweetheart and The Daily, the most impressive work of the year.”
“The Daily is a wonderful addition to our broadcast line-up - a program that will provide an extra layer of context and synchronization with the long-form storytelling our newsroom is producing on a daily basis,” said Betsy Gardella, President & CEO of New Hampshire Public Radio. “Several staff on The Daily’s production team come from a public radio background; that respect and affinity for the public radio audience, combined with The Times’ commitment to fact-based journalism and its tradition of excellence, makes this a program we are very excited about bringing to New Hampshire listeners.”
