Barrington Police Department Hires First Female Officer

NHPR File Photo

The southeast New Hampshire town of Barrington has hired its first female officer since the police department was founded in the 1950s.

The Portsmouth Herald reports 28-year-old Amanda Gauthier was sworn in Monday and joins a force of 10 full-time officers, including Police Chief Bob Williams.

Williams says he's unsure why it took so long to hire a female officer, but stressed that the department has always been open to diversity.

Gauthier says she trains using male physical testing standards to let fellow officers know that she is capable of pulling her own weight.

Williams says Gauthier doesn't require additional training. Gauthier served almost two years at the Rye Police Department before moving to Barrington.
