AG: Police Shoot and Kill Gun-Wielding Man After Car Chase in Rochester

The Attorney General's office says police officers shot and killed a gun-wielding driver after a pursuit ended in a crash and exchange of gunfire in Rochester on Monday.

Douglas Heath, 38, died at the scene.

Heath, who was believed to be staying in the city since Wednesday, was wanted on several warrants, including for alleged drug trafficking and fleeing Maine State Police, police said.

Police received credible evidence that Heath may have possessed three firearms and that he "has no intention of going to jail," according to a statement from the New Hampshire Attorney General's office, State Police, and the Rochester Police Department.

The chase began around 3 p.m. when an officer reported seeing Heath's car. Fifteen minutes later, the driver crashed the vehicle at the corner of Oak Street and Route 125.

Two Rochester officers and two state troopers were at the scene when Heath left the car through the passenger side and the exchange of gunfire began, police said.

A gun was found near Heath's body, police said. An autopsy is planned for Thursday.

The officers' names were not released and, per protocol, they were placed on administrative leave while interviews are conducted.

Neither the officers nor the troopers were wearing body cameras, though the Rochester cruisers are equipped with video cameras. Police said a local witness captured some of the exchange on video.
