He was at the helm of NHPR for fifteen years, during the station's difficult transition from music to news, during its mushrooming audience numbers, during many a fundraiser and during the evolution of new programming like the Front Porch and The Exchange. Mark Handley's last day at NHPR is Friday, when he'll take the helm of a new kind, sailing on a two year trip around-the-world. But before he departs we'll talk with him about his time at NHPR, the changes it's gone through and his thoughts on the future of public radio.

I definitely agree that NHPR

I definitely agree that NHPR & VPR are both professional stations, along with their TV counterparts. We took a trip to Chicago last summer for Book Expo & listened to all the Public Radio Stations on our route. Some of them were almost unlistenable.

Alan & I spent 7 years "cruising" (1992-99)- 3 years on a Pacific Seacraft 31 foot sailboat - Caribbean 1500 Bermuda to St Thomas, then South thru Caribbean to Trinidad & Venezuela. 1994 Transatlantic St Martin to Azores to Falmouth, England. We were Commodores in the Seven Seas Cruising Association. In March '95, we purchased a 72 foot Dutch Barge in UK and crossed the Channel to Calais in June '96- more comfortable traveling inland through France, Belgium & Holland, wintering in Burgundy.

Good cruising Mark- feel free to contact us for any advice.
