The town of Freedom has recently announced that it has joined with Conservation groups and the town of Madison to create a new Town Forest.

The 26 hundred acre site, established to permanently protect the area around Trout Pond, is the largest piece of undeveloped land in Freedom.

And it links up with other conserved properties to form a block of over 5 thousand acres of protected land.

NHPR's Mark Bevis has more.

Freedom's new town forest has been in the works for about 3 years.

And it's enjoyed the support of local residents, conservation groups, and federal and state tax dollars.

The project sets aside thousands of acres for sustainable logging, recreation and wildlife protection.

While this town forest may be new to Freedom, the idea of Community or Town Forests has been around for decades in New Hampshire.

Charlie Niebling has been keeping track of the trend and he says it's growing in popularity.

He's a Vice President with the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests.
