According to the Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics, New Hampshire's prison population is decreasing.

But as NHPR's Mark Bevis reports, the federal numbers are old and in fact, the state is actually seeing its jails swell with new inmates.

Bureau of Justice Statistics is reporting that the state's prison population dropped nearly one percent?.down to 24 hundred and 34 inmates.

But those numbers come from the years 2002 and 2003.

And Jeff Lyons, spokesman for the State Department of Corrections, says since last December, the prison system has been slowly filling back up again.
