Hopkinton businessman bests Republican incumbent Craig Benson by about 14,000 votes.
John Lynch declared victory shortly after 1 am…
"Thank you NH. Thank you…….."
The Hopkinton businessman told supporters he was eager to get to work on issues like heath care and education, but said his first priority would be changing the tone of state government.
"I will work every day to earn the trust that you've placed in me and I will start by restoring integrity to the governor's office."
In defeat, Craig Benson becomes the first governor in 78 years to be denied a second term……Benson may also be the first Governor to be a no-show at his own election night party…. Staffers say Benson watched election returns in a Manchester hotel room, but media were not allowed to see him, and the Governor left without ever visiting supporters in the hotel ballroom. Shortly after midnight spokesman Jack Heath told a surprised crowd that Benson had left the building.
"I just spoke with the Governor and he and the first lady are heading home -- because he is going to be up early. He is convinced that this election will not be played out for several more hours, in fact, it's going to go into the morning."
Heath said the campaign would consider seeking a recount….He said Benson would likely appear in public today, but could not say where or when.
