President George Bush came to Manchester yesterday to fire up supporters in the race for the White House.
New Hampshire Public Radio's David Darman has more.
President Bush told 5,000 supporters at McIntyre Ski Center that he couldn't believe some things Democrat John Kerry said during their first debate.
Bush says he was disturbed by Kerry's assertion that a U.S. preemptive strike should pass some kind of international, "global test".
Bush says Kerry's idea would lead to a loss of national sovereignty.
he wants our national security decisions subject to the approval of a foreign government. (no way, boo) listen, i'll continue to work with our allies. i'll work with the international community. but i will never submit america's security to an international test. (cheers) :22
Bush also told the crowd that sending American troops to fight the war in Iraq was a necessary step in the battle against terrorism.
He said the liberation of Iraq has removed a tyrant from power and made it possible to hold elections in January.
But Bush says there's more that must be done in Iraq before its government can be left to stand on its own.
we will continue to train the iraqies so they will do the hard work of defending their country against those who want to stop the advance of freedom. that is our strategy. we'll implement it as quickly as possible. we;ll get this country on the road to stability and democracy. and then our troops will come home with the honor they have earned. :23
Many of Bush's supporters in New Hampshire approve of the way the President has handled the situation in Iraq.
Bob Beaudet of Manchester says he likes the fact that Bush has been steadfast in his position on the war.
well, he made up his mind that something had to be done. he did it. you know, sometimes things don't go quite the way you'd like them to go but you've got to stick to your guns and get through it. and i think that's the way to go. :12
SOUND UP: protesting
Dozens of Democrats stood outside the ski center to protest the President's visit.
They said they were energized by John Kerry's performance in the debate.
Judy Reardon is a spokesman for the Kerry Campaign in New Hampshire.
She says the debate showed John Kerry is not the caricature that Republicans try to make him out to be.
last night, the people of america got the chance to see both john kerry and george bush on the same stage without handlers, without a partisan crowd, and it was very clear to anyone watching that debate that john kerry will be a stronger leader than george bush in protecting this country. :23
Kerry is scheduled to be back in New Hampshire Sunday evening and plans an event in Hampton on Monday.
President Bush promised his supporters that he'll be back again before election day.
