Democrat Justin Nadeau will face Republican incumbent Jeb Bradley for the first congressional district in November. The Portsmouth attorney beat three Democratic opponents with 47% of the vote.

New Hampshire Public Radio's Amy Quinton reports.

Supporters of 31-year-old Justin Nadeau celebrated the night in a downtown club in Dover. Jane Hoffman, a resident from Nadeau’s hometown of Rye, says his youthful energy is what she thinks will be needed in Congress.

(he’s a young enthusiastic man who’s accomplished a lot for his young age and I think we need more people in Washington that are idealistic and have that youthful optimism.)

The Portsmouth attorney say’s he’s looking forward to a spirited debate with first term Republican incumbent Jeb Bradley. Bradley soundly defeated his challenger Bob Bevill. Nadeau made the high cost of prescription drugs a big issue, and last night once again criticized Bradley for not helping seniors.

(my opponent when he ran for congress said he was going to help seniors get the prescription drugs back from Canada cheaper and he went down to Washington and did not help them he voted against reimportation)

Nadeau grabbed the democratic spot from Bob Bruce, Travis Liles, and Manchester attorney Peter Duffy. Duffy, who’s currently on active duty with the National Guard, was most concerned about the treatment of the country’s armed forces. Duffy came in second –but says he was glad to get as far as he did.

(I think it’s very refreshing that an unheralded grassroots candidate can strike a resonant chord with the voting public. I’d just like to thank all the Manchester folks who voted.)

The first congressional district is a conservative district, but Nadeau says he’s not worried. He’s out to prove that New Hampshire is concerned about issues, and not political parties. For NHPR news, I’m Amy Quinton.
