Police departments around the state are having a tough time recruiting new officers.

Many chiefs have been trying to fill positions on their forces that have been open for a year or more.

Recruiters say it's usually tougher to fill positions during an economic boom. But even with the current economy sputtering along, they still can't seem to find enough people willing to wear the uniform.

Thomas Hammond, a Criminal Justice Professor at St. Anselm College in Manchester, says the September 11th terror attacks may have something to do with that.
