The national publication, Governing Magazine, recently rated the tax systems of all fifty states. The reporters looked at three factors: Did the tax system raise enough money? Was it fair? And did the state collect taxes efficiently?

New Hampshire rated in the middle of the pack. Its collection department does better than most; but its ability to raise enough money and to do so fairly were both rated as “in need of improvement.”

Reporter Richard Greene wrote the section on New Hampshire. Speaking with NHPR’s Jon Greenberg, he said the state is unusual in its commitment to small government and limited services. Greene also noted that New Hampshire counts on business taxes to balance its budget more than almost every other state.
