The Inauguration of Ann Weaver Hart

ANN WEAVER HART IS OFFICIALLY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE.
HER INNAUGURATION TODAY CAPPED TWO DAYS OF CELEBRATIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY.
CORRESPONDENT ROGER WOOD REPORTS.

"By the authority vested in me, by the Board of Trustees of the University System of New Hampshire, I hereby name you, Dr. Ann Weaver Hart, the President of the University of New Hampshire."

With the official charge by UNH Trustee Chairman John Lynch, Hart becomes the 18th. President of the University, and the first to be inaugurated in the Whittemore Center Arena. Behind a flower draped dais, Dr. Hart called University Presidents the most fortunate of leaders.

"We work among passionate and committed people in an atmosphere charged with new ideas, creative energy and rapid individual growth."

But she also acknowledged the challenge of becoming a great research university, as well as an effective teaching university.

"I ask, are we willing to change our curricula, or pedagogy and the way that faculty and graduate students interact with undergraduate students to make that happen? I believe that the answer is yes, and I will work with you to achieve this goal."

Dr. Hart, during her inaugural address, also called for the creation of an academic program that is coherent and focused, so that graduates attain distinction for the ways they think and solve problems. For NHPR News, this is Roger Wood at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham.
