Farewell to the Maul
By Kevin Gardner on Monday, September 23, 2002.
listen: No audio currently available. Order on CD (pdf).
Summer officially ends this morning, and for a lot of New Hampshire residents, the onset of cooler weather means the beginning of a long season of woodburning in stoves and fireplaces. Firewood isn?t scarce in a state that?s 83% forested, but the work of preparing and storing it takes time, especially if you cut your own. Humanities reporter Kevin Gardner has done just that for many years, but advancing age and time limitations have brought about some changes in his woodcutting methods. This year he bids farewell to the maul.
