Boston Artist's Olympic Art Makes A Splash in Vancouver

By Virginia Prescott on Monday, February 22, 2010.

Although Olympic athletes dazzle us and capture our imagination, there is a lot more talent at work in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Cultural Olympiad is a series of public artworks on display around Vancouver. Our next guest is not competing at an Olympic event, yet she’s pulled off a mighty feat, winning a commission for a public art piece now installed at the Olympic Oval in Richmond, near the site of speed skating events. Janet Echelman is a Boston-based artist whose works have animated atmospheres all over the world. Her new work, “Water Sky Garden” is a 75,000-square-foot installation, recalling fishing nets floating above walkways and a reflecting pool that filters water from a nearby building.
