Concord Community Music School

The Concord Community Music School is a hub not only for top-notch musical instruction and performance, but for the joy and friendship that come from making music together. Members of the school’s Youth Folk Ensemble became fast friends and a tight-knit band. David Surrette is the Music School’s folk music coordinator.

Surette: One of the main things we do is provide private lesson instruction, but we also do a lot of other things. We have a big singing program, we have an early childhood music program. We have a big ensemble program that serves classical students, jazz students, folks and traditional music students. We’ve had a Folk Music Ensemble for a long time now.

Students: It’s such a joy. It’s something to look forward to. “I’m going to the music school. Yes! I’m going to see my friends, I’m going to talk with them, I’m going to play music with them. Life is good!” And it’s great to have such great teachers, too.

Surette: This current group has been together for about two years. And we focus on traditional music, which means most of the music we work on is learned by ear.

Student: It’s sort of a way to express joy.

Surette: For them the experience has gone outside just the walls of the school here and outside the 45-minute block that we have together. To involve casual music making at different town events and gigs and things. It’s really nice to see them having such a friendship and a big part of it is based around sharing music together. That’s been very gratifyi9ng for me, we can call that a big success.

Students: It’s fun to play together. Lots of fun to play music that we all like.
