Community Bridges
By Deborah Schachter on Saturday, December 26, 2009.
When Bill and Martha Hickey’s son, was diagnosed with autism at age 2, the family turned to Community Bridges for help connecting with the services Billy needed. The organization was part of a team that helped the family achieve the goal of full community integration for their son. Well, our son Bill is our youngest of two boys. He was identified with autism when he was two years old. Community Bridges has helped us from the beginning with making sure that we have skilled people, who know Bill or are willing to learn about Bill. What he likes to do. And help us assure that Bill has the opportunities to participate in activities that his peers participate in. Bill’s always been a very active boy, who enjoys all sorts of sports – watching them and playing them. So with the therapists through school, we were able to work on Bill’s walking pattern. We were then able to start training him to run. And he now participates as a member of the school’s cross-country team in the fall, and track team in the spring. Bill is sixteen years old. So Bill started working this summer two days a week at Simoe’s Market in the South end of Concord. When Bill ages out of the school system at 21, Community Bridges is going to help us segue and give those supports to Bill so that when he graduates he is a contributing member of our society in whatever he chooses to do.
