Granite State Independent Living

Granite State Independent Living provided Barbara Sims with personal care, homemaking services and advocacy that helped her stay in her own home and remain independent in her community. Lori Quigley is Barbara’s daughter.

Lori: My mother had become a consumer of Granite State Independent Living I believe it was in 1994 or 1995. At that point she had lost one leg due to peripheral arterial disease and a blood clot. But then, the other leg started to hurt. We went to the doctor right away of course, and unfortunately there was another blood clot and she went through several amputations.

Barbara: They thought I was gonna stay in a nursing home – no way!

Lori: None of us want her in a nursing home. GSIL was absolutely wonderful because I was with my mother around the clock for quite a while and I couldn’t do it any more. They provided somebody that was able to help her to eat and do a lot of physical things with her because she couldn’t do it on her own.

Because of them, we were able to keep my mother in the house. This apartment is a good little setup for her. She has a nice little porch, and a garden out back that we plant for her. It’s just great for her because she’s not cooped up. She can go out and socialize and be a part of the community.

Barbara: I go tootin' here and there, I enjoy living in Concord.

Lori: And it’s nice for us knowing that she’s right downtown, and that I’m just two blocks away. If she needs anything I’m not even a heartbeat away.
