Grafton County Senior Citizens Council
By Deborah Schachter on Saturday, November 21, 2009.
The Grafton County Senior Citizens Council works to support the health, dignity and independence of older adults. One way it does that is by delivering meals to home-bound elders. Dick Jaeger has been delivering meals as a volunteer since 2003. Today the menu is hamburger, potato puffs, green beans, usually some kind of dessert – whether it’s cake or fruit – and then some kind of salad so they get a balanced diet; and then a small container of two-percent milk. Hi there. How are you? Long time no see. What, did you get tired of your own cooking? You feel like you are giving folks who don’t have a lot of human contact a little bit of that. And other people drive this route other parts of the week and I’m sure they feel the same way. I really think the senior citizen group in our country, a lot of them have challenges and needs that aren’t well met. So you feel, when you can bring something into their life every day plus some good nutrition, that you’re making a contribution. That’s one of the reasons the whole GCSCC exists, is to allow people to make choices and live in their own homes for as long as they possibly can and not have to be forced into some living situation that they don’t want to go into.
