NPR News observes Veterans Day this year with a series of veteran profiles -- one from each of the U.S. wars in the last 60 years, from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan. In the profiles, veterans will share what it was like for them to return home and re-enter society.

Boots on the Ground: Esprit de Corps
Brian Turner, infantry team leader with the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Unit in Iraq, talks about his book of poetry is "Here, Bullet." We talk to soldiers about Helen Benedict's book "The Lonely Soldier: The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq." Tyler Boudreau, an Iraq War veteran and 12-year veteran of the Marine Corps, explains why he resigned his commission due to reservations over the legitimacy of that war. We meet Sergeant 1st Class Toby Nunn. After two tours of duty in Iraq, he now works for Soldiers' Angels, a nonprofit that supports veterans and deployed military personnel and their families. Johnthan Pieslak is joined by Marines and soldiers to talk about their favorite combat songs. And John Wroblewski Sr. travels to Iraq to see where his son, 2nd Lt. John "JT" Wroblewski, died on April 6, 2004, in Ramadi.

Boots on the Ground: Covering the War

Philip Gourevitch talks about the Errol Morris' film "Standard Operating Procedure" about the American soldiers at Abu Ghraib. Commander of Coalition Forces in Iraq from June 2003 to June 2004 General Ricardo Sanchez discusses his experiences at Abu Ghraib. Mike Hoyt, executive editor of the "Columbia Journalism Review" talks about his work on "Reporting Iraq: An Oral History of the War by the Journalists Who Covered It." Brian Palmer was embedded for CNN three times with the 1st Battalion/Second Marines between 2004 and 2006. And Deborah Scranton, director of "The War Tapes", talks about giving New Hampshire National Guard soldiers the chance to record their experiences in combat in Iraq for one year.
