Nashua Adult Learning Center

Jairus Olocho came to the U.S. from Kenya after receiving a green card through the immigration lottery. The Nashua Adult Learning Center helped him prepare for and achieve his U.S. high school equivalency degree.

I came with my wife and three children. I had already finished my secondary schooling in Kenya. I was advised that colleges in the United States would not admit someone with a Kenyan diploma. I was told that I must get a G.E.D. I have been going to the Adult Learning Center for the G.E.D. which I did acquire.

I registered for classes and I began doing the L.N.A. [Licensed Nurses Assistant] course. And I completed early last month. My goal is to continue with my studies and become a registered nurse. Back in Kenya I worked at an orphanage. I used to take the sick children to the hospital. I began realizing how important it is to help someone who is sick. They need somebody around them to give them some comfort. That’s one reason why I decided to become a registered nurse, to be able to have something to give to the community.

So at Nashua, at the Learning Center, I had an experience that has put me on a very good track. These people proved to be such a wonderful group of Americans. They did give us a hand.
