Gourmet Bites The Dust

By Virginia Prescott on Monday, October 5, 2009.

Employees at Conde Nast, the high-end magazine publisher, got some sad news this morning. The company sent a company-wide memo announcing that it's folding Gourmet, Cookie, and two bridal magazines, Elegant Bride and Modern Bride.

Media watchers are pointing the finger at McKinsey. The consulting firm has been working with the posh publishing house to turn the ship around after a long period of devastating ad declines. Conde boss Chuck Townsend had previously said that righting the ship could be done without losing any of its signature magazines.

Our condolences go out to those who are now out of work, and who helped build iconic brands for the century-old publisher. Conde says the Gourmet brand books and television programming will keep cooking. And we’ll just trust that brides-to-be will soldier on as well. [via Gawker]
