Your Free DUI Practice Call

By Martha Poole on Tuesday, September 1, 2009.

The state of Utah has a new strategy to dissuade driving under the influence - helping you practice that uncomfortable phone call from jail. As the slogan for the new campaign puts it, "Getting a DUI is easy, calling your mom from jail is hard."

Under this premise, the Utah Highway Patrol has set up a toll-free number that allows participants to practice making the dreaded call. Callers can have a simulated conversation with several different characters, including an angry wife or girlfriend, incredulous husband or boyfriend, a hysterical mother, disapproving father, a slacker roommate, or a lawyer.

A recorded message provides one side of the conversation, prompting you to fill in the rest. The campaign runs through September 7th. If nothing sets you straight like one of mom’s guilt trips, give the number a call at 1-877-JAIL-FON.
