Eating Habits in England

By Anna Lacey on Wednesday, July 22, 2009.

While a frightening number of adult Americans are starving themselves, health officials in England are looking at an entirely different problem.

One of the most celebrated dishes in Britain is curry, popularized by the large community of South Asian immigrants. But the ghee, or clarified butter, used to cook some curries is high in fat, which can contribute to heart disease. South Asians living in the UK have a much higher risk than white Europeans of dying prematurely from heart disease.

It’s such a concern that the Aga Khan, who heads the Ismaili community, is trying to transform the eating habits of South Asian households. Anna Lacey reported for the BBC's Health Check from east London, where she visited heart specialist Dr. Sandeep Gupta.
