Big Pharma In Venezuela

By Virginia Prescott on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.

If you thought American doctors were the only ones lured by free lunches, free samples, and other drug company giveaways, think again. Companies like GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer are now looking beyond the US and Europe for new markets.

Pfizer is currently training Venezuelans to promote drugs like Lipitor to doctors in the slums of Caracas. In addition to Lipitor pens and mugs, the company is also loaning cars to reps and computers to doctors and subsidizing their internet fees. Lipitor is now the second-best selling drug in Venezuela, suggesting that these strategies are working. Avery Johnson is a staff writer for the Wall Street Journal. She traveled to Venezuela to report this story.
