DRED Commissioner George Bald

By Laura Knoy on Monday, July 13, 2009.

Earlier this summer the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation put out a plan to aimed at saving money and managing state parks. The plan quickly caused an outcry because it appeared to show that several popular parks could soon be going up for sale or lease. Days later, DRED commissioner George Bald stepped in and shelved the controversial plan. We’ll sit down with the commissioner and ask him about the future of our state parks.

Was the plan actually a power play to upset everyone

I can not feel that your department really thought the plan would fly, and must openly wonder why it ever saw the light of day. Your agency leased sunapee which had been purchased to prevent logging on it after the state developed a ski area there. it any wonder why people worry about parklands. That being said what other options do you think would help out the parks?

question for George Bald interview on 7/12

When we talk about NH state parks, it seems to me the private management of the ski area at Mount Sunapee state park has been a huge economic success. Can you comment on opposition to their expansion plans as compared to the recent support for similar expansion plans at Cannon Mountain? Thank you.

State Parks

State parks are a legacy we need to preserve for future generations. Sale of public lands sets a poor precedent which could jeprodize other publically protected lands. I am glad that this plan is no longer being considered.
