The Demise of Dairy
By Laura Knoy on Monday, June 15, 2009.
The dairy industry has been struggling recently. National milk prices are now so low that farmers lose money on every single gallon they sell. It’s forced some farm owners to close down their businesses completely, some to go deep into debt and still others to diversify to stay afloat. We’ll see how the national problems of dairy are now affecting farms in New England and what may be done to pull the industry out. Guests

READ the books, Food and Behavior, Barbara Reed Stitt, Don't Drink Your Milk, Dr. Frank Oski, Milk A to Z, Robert Cohen, anything by Dr. Benjamin Spock, anything by Dr. Neal Barnard, anything by Dr. John Mcdougall to see the profound pretense of our need for cow milk and the diseases it increases.
The nations that consume the most dairy have the HIGHEST, not lowest, rates of osteoporosis from loosing calcium due to acidic diets...
How do cows get calcium?
How do horses get such strong bones without the need for the milk of any other species?
HOW LONG WILL PEOPLE BELIEVE THE DAIRY INDUSTRY FRAUD????
How long with nutrition policy be set by corporate agribusiness insiders on USDA boards?
We need an overhaul of our agriculture system that WE pay for via the Farm Bill.....
Our society's health IS a reflection of nutrition policy.... Not a pretty picture.
Dairy farmers could/should grow and make soy, hemp, rice, almond milks.....SO MUCH better!!!!!
Meriden Grange in Meriden, NH has been having an agricultural series this spring. How timely was this topic that NHPR took up on the Demise of Dairy. James Maroney, author of "Political Economy of Milk," came and spoke at Meriden on his book and what the milk climate is like in VT. We also had Gypsy Meadow Farm talk about their CSA. Support local agriculture, spend more of your money on locally grown and raised foods.
The 1927 act to create the federal dairy pricing structure was created to protect the farmer from low prices, because they were setting up a monopoly milk pricing system. Now the Federal Dept of Agriculture which is the over sight dept is allowing the low pricing to continue at the benifit of the dairy coop's and retail market. They have the power to change this. When prices were at $25/100 the consumer was not complaining about this price only corporations such as Dean food was not making is projected profit margin that is wanted. The Fed Agriculture Sec need to change this and has the power to set a fair price until a new Fed milk pricing system is put in place to provide the farmer a profit margin need to exist as a business enity.
The entire focus of the dairy program sadly, never opened the discussion to how the "veal" industry is a direct consequence of breeding female cows repeatedly and disposing of the males in veal crates.
They live a few weeks in terror, fear, trauma, chained and restrained, fed an unnatural diet.
Then they are taken to slaughter. Can any of us imagine the terror they experience from birth to death? www.animalsvoice.com click on veal or dairy farming
How DARE we take what nature intended for them, and FORCE them into this evil situation, especially since cow milk makes humans SICK!
What myopic vision we have.
And we wonder why we are plagued with bullying, skyrocketing rates of diseases, and emotional turmoil sends kids to the drug world...
We can't even SEE how nutrition affects every level of human life.
I phoned Rep. Tara Sad after hearing her support for dairy, asked politely if she had a moment to speak with me about her comments, and when I asked her if she had ever read any books about dairy and disease, she flatly said she supported the dairy industry, we "need" to drink it, and hung up on me.
If this is how New Hampshire tax payers are listened to by Committee Chairs, as she is on the House Ag and Environment Committee, I'd say we are in trouble. How infantile and bias of her. Anyone holding such a post SHOULD be neutral, informed, educated about ALL sides of this issue. Childrens lives and health depend on it.
Dairy IS addicting . Read about Betacasomorphine-7. No wonder kids have trouble in school. They're on opiates!!!!!
