Mayors Across America

By Virginia Prescott on Thursday, June 11, 2009.

The cross-country road trip is an iconic American experience, filled with mountain peaks and corn fields, highway diners and road side attractions. But when photographer Ed Morris rode his bicycle from Seattle to Washington, DC, he had more than sightseeing in mind. He wanted to photograph the mayors of small towns like Culbertson, Montana, population 716, and big cities, to better understand what it means to be a leader in America.

So Ed and his friend Tim Hovey strapped ninety pounds of tents and camera equipment to their bikes and hit the road. Ed Morris documents the 3,600-mile journey in his new book Mayors Across America and joins us on the line from California.

I'm just jealous he got to ride his bike across the country!
