Polaroids Make a Comeback

By Zach Johnk on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.

Back in the 60’s, you couldn’t go to a party without seeing a Polaroid camera. Nowadays, they’ve largely been replaced by the digital variety, but a group of Dutch scientists are working to bring the retro cameras back.

First, they have to reinvent the film. Polaroid stopped producing its film a year ago, and the chemical formula used to make it was lost years earlier. The scientists’ goal is to mass-produce new film by December. The architect of this project? An Austrian entrepreneur who is betting that demand for Polaroid cameras will skyrocket once again.

He’s not alone, either. The iPhone now has an application that makes its pictures look like Polaroids, and develops them by shaking it - like a Polaroid picture.
