America’s Complicated Image Abroad
By Laura Knoy on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.
Former CNN world affairs correspondent Ralph Begleiter says that no nation on earth has a black-and-white relationship with America. Instead, he says, criticism of our government or our policies often co-exists with an affinity for Americans and their culture. We'll talk about how the rest of the world sees the United States. My nephew who works as a journalist for Al Jazeera English introduced me to their website.
It is now on my daily news toolbar and I go to it daily for real news. I find it hard to wade through the entertainment aspect of TV news.Al Jazeera English's analysis of US news is also quite astute and world details very informative.
What will motivate the cable companies to carry international news programs?
I emailed in this question this am but I was driving so I had the wrong email originally. They were kind enough to ask me to post this :
Thecountries he mentioned ex china can view our tv news observations using tbe inet or do we now have access to china's or the other countries he mentioned journalism and or online commentary that may inlcude their culture's opinions about the US and its policies? HOw we are perceived internationally I agree relates to how we are presented in the media including the new 24/7 ability to communicate. How this information is then accessed in certain countries interests me. In 200 he was correct the internet was just taking off. Selling products online and shipping to your home for the holiday season was a foreign and risky venture. I know this because I was in business ot business sales for Worldcom and saw the implementation of all of this technology in the Boston area. We set up networks internationally but these spots were never rural or remote. They are laying infrastructure in India for cable tv and analog phone service still! I wonder really can access the internet anywya to state why and how they perceive America the way they do? A side note not only is it great he supports the journalists in the trenches today but I remember the day that Mr Nicholas Danilof was held hostage in the USSR and was accused ot spying for the US.
Old news but an interesting angle on how far we have come perhaps. (His son is a friend of mine).
Does Mr. Begleiter know about globalvoices.org?
Thank you,
I believe the corporate and ethnic media of the US is primarily responsible for America's image abroad. There is a hand-full of American media corporations that monopolize the television news markets, movie markets, and other television markets.
Corporate media is careful to disseminate information that will not offend their corporate clients and their ethnic heritage. While ruthlessly attacking non-affiliates and perceived enemies of their self interests.
The American media does not represent the people I see in every day life. And that is a major problem. The US media goes un-checked and free of the scrutiny they inflict on others.
We either need a government media center or a corporate/ethnic media that is evaluated and critiqued openly. And let the American people weigh in.
