By Laura Knoy on Tuesday, May 26, 2009.

I just started listening to nhpr about 3 months ago, and I am hooked. The Exchange is my favorite, but all the segments are awesome.

I was born and raised in NH and now live in MA. When I think “outdoors” I think of NH first. Of course there are SP’s in MA and other states, but my heart and mind go to NH.
From Lake Francis to Mt. Monadnock, I have enjoyed many years of camping and hiking in NH SP’s. I will look to use a SP over a private CG or recreation area any day. And I enjoyed many years of summer camps as a kid in Gorham and Lake Winnipesaukee.
I didn’t know the revenue is fee-based. In my experience the fees have been very modestly priced. While I would not like to see them be hiked up in price, in MA I have seen some very high fees for entry into some parks. But I would be willing to pay more to see improvements.
I agree with an earlier caller who likened the SP’s as “jewels” of the state, and while it may seem altruistic, I think in promoting a “greener” state, it's everyone’s responsibility to maintain these parks.
When I drive to some of these parks, I pass land lots where I once saw trees and now see strip malls or touristy outlets, and I can’t get to the SP fast enough to escape the asphalt jungles closer to Boston or Tilton.
I take pride in the beauty and the accessibility to this beauty in my native state.
Apparently many others appreciate our parks as well. This just shows the importance of keeping them beautiful.
