The GPS Revolution

By Virginia Prescott on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.

Most of us know GPS, or global positioning systems, as the things that give talking driving directions. Now smart phones like the Google Phone and the iPhone have dozens of applications that use GPS to connect with others and to find everything from the nearest coffee shop to identifying constellations in the night sky.

WIRED Magazine contributing editor Mathew Honan spent a month test-driving some of these GPS apps, and is with us to share the results.

Here are some of Mat's favorite GPS apps:

Cab4me – helps you find a local cab company
Trapster – crowdsources location of police traps
iNap – wakes you up so you don’t miss your stop on the bus
Joyity – play tag with strangers
Sit-or-squat – finds public restrooms
Locale – changes your phone's settings based on location
