Transportation Commissioner George Campbell

The DOT is hitting some economic “bumps” in the road, with more budget cuts coming and roads and bridges in need of repair. We’ll talk with Commissioner Campbell about those topics, as well as his hopes for federal stimulus dollars, the roll tolls may play in funding these projects and the widening of Interstate 93. Guest

Rail: We need to discuss Rail rather than widening I-93.
I do not have a specific question for Mr. Campbell; Only a reflection. I knew Mr. Campbell many years ago when he was town manager of my hometown, Dexter Maine. He came to Dexter in the middle of the 1970's when the town was sleeply, if not backwards place. Mr. Cambell worked hard to bring about change to my hometown. I will not mention the photograph.
I wish to express my best wishes to Mr. Campbell in his current role, because I know he will serve New Hampshire well. Though Mr. Campbell will do well if he can finally restore passenger rail service to your state.

The New Hampshire DOT needs to assume its full role as a "Transportation" agency and not just a Highway Department. Far more emphasis and budget needs to be focused on rail (both passenger and freight) and on bus transportation for our people. What are you doing to accomplish this conversion to a broader transportation role for DOT?
Mr. Campbell should take a look at the abuse of funds in city of Portsmouth, specifically Public Works and the supervisors that have been milking the system for years.
Does the DOT have any plans for building/improving paths for bicycle transportation? It seems this may be especially useful for commuting in and out of our larger cities. We should think about getting away from the automobile as our sole mode of transportation. We have at least 8 months of bicycle weather in NH.
What are DOT's plans for slowing traffic on this road or otherwise making it safer, while still maintaining it as a major East-West corridor?
I travel South from Intervale to Boston often and feel the most dangerous part of the journey is entering the tolls. As I slow to even 30 mph I am constantly passed within 100 yards of the Easy Pass Lane. I would welcome increased enforcement, including fines.
I live in Hillsboro and commute to Concord each day. It would be nice if there was public transportation available between Concord and Keene.
The solution to the issue of getting more revenue is to just raise the gas tax instead of adding more toll booths. The toll booths are just going to create even worse traffic problems that we don't need.
I would speculate that the state could raise a lot more money for roads with an increase in the gas tax.
