Newsmakers of the Year 2008: Presidential Primary
More than twenty major candidates and nearly two years of full-time campaigning came to a head on January 8th, when Granite State voters came out in record numbers to cast their ballots in the first-in-the-nation primary. On the Republican side, Arizona Senator John McCain, whose campaign was short on money and support just months earlier, decisively beat former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and beginning his road to the GOP nomination. The Democratic primary, meanwhile, went to New York Senator Hillary Clinton, who managed to slow the momentum of Illinois Senator Barack Obama, who had surged in the polls after his win in the Iowa caucuses. The close result foreshadowed the weeks to come, as Obama and Clinton would battle across the country for their party's nomination. The two joined forces behind Obama's campaign in June with a symbolic joint appearance in Unity, New Hampshire.
