Fire Marshal: Use Generators Safely During Outage

By Dan Gorenstein on Tuesday, December 16, 2008.

At least 39 people have called 9-1-1 since Saturday morning complaining of exposure to carbon monoxide.

The state’s Fire Marshall Bill Degnan says the problem stems from people using generators and other devices like propane heaters.

TAPE: the use of these devices should not be in an area where you sleep. Use them clear of those areas and use them smartly. If you use them have a carbon monoxide detector in between where that device is being used and where you are sleeping.

Degnan encouraged people who use generators to use them outside, at least ten feet from the building with the exhaust pointing away.

The Marshall also says after the power has returned, individuals should first check for fire hazards like items resting on top of baseboard heaters.

He also said people shouldn’t flip the main circuit breaker, instead, turning one breaker on at a time.
