Warmer Weather Means Shelters May Be Less Crowded Tonight
By Elaine Grant on Monday, December 15, 2008.
About one hundred and seventy thousand New Hampshire residents remain without power today. From New Hampshire Public Radio, Elaine Grant reports. Stella Gambino sat in her wheelchair in the doorway of the Rochester Middle School last night, getting some fresh air. She'd been at the school, a Red Cross shelter, for two days, and expected to stay for several more. Like two hundred cities and towns in New Hampshire, Rochester still has no power. Police found Gambino shivering in her cold condo on Friday and brought her here. "I had been there all day with no heat, and I kept thinking it'll come back on. And I lit the burners on top of my stove. And they said, 'You can't do that.' I said, 'Well, that's the only heat I have.'" About one hundred people stayed at the shelter last night. Temperatures are climbing to the high 50's so shelters should see fewer visitors this evening. For NHPR, I'm Elaine Grant. |
