Here's What's Awesome: People-Powered Subways, Eco-Friendly Fonts

Tokyo Subway

The last three times Here's What's Awesome has been posted, the weather has gotten worse - not something any of us need given the ice storms of the weekend. Here's hoping that streak comes to an end, by virtue of the awesomeness of this week's links:

The power of crowds, indeed
Remember hearing about the nightclub that uses dancer energy to help power itself? It looks like the dance floor isn't the only place we'll be powering our own endeavors. Travelers on the Tokyo subway will
help generate the energy that powers entry gates
. The term for these kinds of floors, by the way, is "piezoelectric." [Inhabitat]

Please consider the environment before using Serif Bold
As more and more of us go paperless, we save not only trees, but ink. But for those times when you absolutely do need a hard copy, there's still a way to keep your ink usage to a minimum: EcoFont, which uses tiny holes in each letter to reduce ink - the inventor claims 20% less, in fact. You'll be that much greener than your coworker who insists on using New Comic Times Bold Condensed-ica for every print job. [Presurfer]

Let's See Ian Anderson Do This!
You've probably heard beatboxing, even if you haven't heard the term. But you probably haven't heard fluteboxing - the vocal stylings of beatboxing with flute added in. The fellow in the video below is called Nathan "Flutebox" Lee, and you won't find many flute players that can do what he does:

Now it's your turn, and rumor has it that if you post a link below, Word of Mouth senior producer Andrew Walsh will perform an original beatbox for you on the flugelhorn.
