Frequently Asked Questions: NHPR's Campaign for 21st Century Radio

What is a capital campaign? An intensive multi-year (usually 3-5 years) fundraising effort to secure gifts and pledges for a specific purpose, such as physical improvements (like a new building), equipment, and new program initiatives.

What is NHPR’s capital campaign all about? 27 years ago a group of people got together and created NHPR, also known back then as WEVO. We had a small office on Pleasant Street in Concord with a handful of staff. In 1991 we moved to our current location – 207 North Main Street. Today, we are busting at the seams – with almost 40 staff members.

In 2008 we purchased the top floor of 2 Pillsbury Street in Concord. We will have a state-of-the-art broadcast facility with the ability to increase the quality and reach of our coverage throughout the state, and the resources to provide our content online and on-demand, in order to meet the needs of future audiences. It will allow us to provide at least two distinct programming channels, significantly increasing the station’s public service.

How much does NHPR want to raise? The goal for the capital campaign is $6.5 million.

How much has NHPR raised? As of November 2008, we’ve raised approximately $5.9 million.

Has the NHPR Staff and Board of Directors contributed? Yes. As of December 1st, 100% of the NHPR staff and the NHPR Board of Directors have contributed to the capital campaign.

I keep hearing about the Kresge Foundation challenge grant. What is that all about? If NHPR can raise $1 million in the next several months, the Kresge Foundation will contribute $250,000 towards the capital campaign!

What about the Every Listener Wall? What is that all about? Every listener who donates $50 to the campaign will have their name inscribed on the Every Listener Wall in our soon-to-be new home at 2 Pillsbury Street. Families donating $50 for each family member will see those names inscribed as well – preserving a legacy of their own dedication and generosity, as well as securing NHPR’s.

Does the donor’s contribution to the Every Listener Campaign renew their membership to NHPR? No. This campaign is different than our membership campaigns. The money raised during our regular on-air fundraisers goes towards general operating expenses. The money raised during this campaign will go towards the capital campaign. (You can always become a member or renew membership through the Support page.

When is NHPR moving to 2 Pillsbury Street? We are moving December 19th, 2008.

When can we tour the new building? NHPR will be holding special events throughout the year that will give you everyone the opportunity to tour the new facilities. Once the staff gets acclimated to the new surroundings we’ll begin to schedule tours and special events. We have an online photo gallery of the new space as well.

How can I contribute? You can contribute online or by calling 1-888-805-6477.

Is the contribution tax deductible? Yes.
