Good News in the News Biz

By Avishay Artsy on Friday, September 12, 2008.

It's a tough time for newspapers - with the exception of newspapers that serve immigrant communities, which are booming. The Boston Globe reports that a Boston-area Spanish language paper is expanding from weekly to six days a week.

As the Globe reports, "Siglo21 expects to become a daily on Sept. 15, the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month. The Lawrence-based newspaper - which is now distributed on Thursdays in New England cities with large Latino populations - will now be distributed six days a week, primarily in the Merrimack Valley. On Thursdays the paper will continue to be dispersed throughout New England."

It comes as welcome news at a time when most newspapers are scaling back staffs and news pages. For a sense of just how deep the cuts have been, check out the Recovering Journalist blog, written by consultant and entrepreneur Mark Potts. In this post from August, he tallies up the grim news for newspaper employees - more than 6,300 employees at the 100 largest newspapers have lost jobs through buyouts or layoffs in the past year.
