Club Green
By Willa Kammerer on Monday, September 8, 2008.
![]() Going green and going clubbing became synonymous in Rotterdam last week with the grand opening of Club Watt, the world’s first “sustainable dance club". Club Watt’s floors are engineered to convert the kinetic energy of clubbers’ dancing into electricity, which, in turn, illuminates LED lights beneath the transparent floor. These lights function as an “energy meter,” changing colors as the dancing—and energy generation—intensifies. Other green features include toilets that flush with recycled rainwater, a bar with organic beer on tap, and a boutique selling fair-trade clothing. According to Club Watt’s website, the club consumes 30% less energy, 50% less water, and emits 30% less carbon than comparable clubs, while diverting 50% of its waste. For an in-depth version of Club Watt’s sustainability plan, download a PDF at the club’s website. Click here to watch Club Watt in action. About usWord of Mouth is all about what's new.
