I had an opportunity to see a rising star, Sarah Jarosz, (pronounced JaROSE) at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. She’s only 16 years old and has shared the stage with some of the best bluegrass musicians around. At Grey Fox she was sharing the Masters Stage with David Grisman and Ronnie McCoury. She plays mandolin, claw hammer banjo and guitar and has a voice that has the soul of seasoned performer. She just signed with Sugar Hill records and should be putting out an album sometime in the near future. Visit her myspace page and sample her playing for yourself.
When I see young talent like Sarah taking the traditional music scene by storm, it gives me hope for the future of traditional music. She’s quite a talent.
Speaking of talent and nurturing traditional music, on September 13th the Strolling of the Heifers and Twin Cloud productions will bring Pete Seeger for a benefit concert to the Latchis Theater in Brattleboro. I’m looking forward to seeing the folk legend with his grandson (and member of the neo-trad band The Mammals) Tao Rodriguez-Seeger along with bluesman/guitarist Guy Davis. That’s what I call ending the summer on a high note.
My music picks of the week:
Contemporary folk fans will love the new one from Canadian super-folk group The Duhks, Fast Paced World (Sugar Hill Records). Darrell Scott covers Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and John Hartford with Modern Hymns (Appleseed)and Bromberg fans will love the new remastered re-release of the previously limited edition David Bromberg Quartet's Live New York City 1982 (Appleseed). New Folk, classic folk and traditional folk at its best!
Tune in Sunday for a sample!
